Lumibug rescue

 It was a hot afternoon. The soft breeze, swaying the trees, was a welcomed relief for Nida as she was taking her runeboo for a walk. It wasn’t much of a walk though, since Mellow got tired not long after heading out the door, and was now demanding to be carried instead.

 Nida’s ears perked, as she heard small, rapid flapping and saw red lights franticly blinking from the other side of the tall grass. “Stay here Mellow, I’m going to check it out.” She said and put the lazy creature down. On the grass it just rolled over on its stomach and relaxed. It didn’t care much.

 Nida curiously peeked on the other side. Finding three lumibugs, one stuck in the mud and struggling, its two friends flapping worriedly about. Seeing the lumibug trapped in the mud, she couldn’t just leave it there. She broke off a straw and tried to make the lumibug climb on top of it. Though she had good intentions, she only succeeded in making the lumibug freak out even more.

 Realizing this was not going to work, Nida sighed. Only one thing to do then. She waltzed into the mud. The two other lumibugs, seeing this giant approaching their friend, where so spooked that they took off.

 The last lumibug was shaking. It was trapped in the mud, unable to escape as Nida approached. Nida sat down on her knees. They were both still, staring at each other. Nida stretched out her hand cautiously. The scared lumibug flashed bright red, and she retracted her hand quickly.

 “I’m not gonna harm you, little guy. I just want to help.” She cooed. She stretched out her hand again, this time more slowly. The lumibug continued to resist, but she scooped it into her hands. The lumibug shook and shook, and Nida desperately tried brushing off the mud on its body.

 The lumibug stilled. Its colour, slowly turning from alarm red, to a more curious yellow. It flapped its wings a few times. It vibrated its antennas. The lumibug’s colour changed completely to purple as it realised it was free.

 Though Nida could not hear it, the lumibug must have called for its friends, because they returned, both flashing a purple as well. Nida decided the purple meant they were grateful. The lumibugs flashed purple once more, and then flew off together.

 Nida went back to Mellow. Looking at the ground where Mellow had kicked up the dust by rolling around, she noticed something shiny! “ A gold coin, how lucky!” she thought, and smiled to herself.

I had a lot of fun with the drawing. Writing a story to go with it is also very unusual for me, but it was fun to try that too.
